Rediscovering the Basics
Principles and Guidelines for Effective Communication
Communicating has never been more difficult. New media cropping up every few months, shorter attention spans, and increased competition for time render old approaches seemingly ineffective. Every time a new tool hits the market we have to learn a new set of rules . . . or do we?
Every new set of rules is based on fundamental principles of communication, as are rules for writers, principles of interpretation, principles of design, rules for presenters, steps for interpretive planning, and every set of guidelines for communicating. Since the basic principles of communication are based on the way humans are wired to choose, process, and retain information, they remain the one constant in this ever-changing world of communication.
This 1-day workshop covers the basic principles of communication and how they can be applied to planning and designing interpretive strategies that your audiences are willing and able to spend time on – the key precursors to communication. At the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- Evaluate the potential of every new technology in terms of its ability to help you communicate;
- Choose the right medium for the right audience and right situation;
- Design so you get the most out of each medium you use;
- Layout sequences of communication strategies (information networks) that support and enrich the entire visitor experience;
- Locate information where it is most likely to be used;
- Select interpretive stories that you can communicate effectively;
- Explain the “why” behind your interpretive planning and design decisions;
- Evaluate all of your existing communication strategies and improve them.
In short, you will be able to create orientation, wayfinding and interpretive strategies that work.
