Plan for Success
The IN Approach to Interpretive Planning

The Information Network (IN) Approach is a systematic planning process for determining what visitor experiences will get you the most interpretive bang for the buck, and then determining the information you need to offer—orientation, wayfinding and interpretation—in the right locations to facilitate those experiences. The result is a plan for an entire linked information network, extending beyond your boundaries, that starts where visitors are and takes them where you want them to go, physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Why use the IN Approach to planning? Because it matches the way visitors choose and use information, resulting in a more powerful interpretive experience.

This 2-day workshop
covers the basic principles of communication and then applies those principles to an interpretive planning process that creates a plan for the entire information network—orientation, wayfinding and interpretation—to support your visitors' experience. At the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Use the IN Approach to develop a plan for the information network you need
  • Identify and profile audiences without a costly market study
  • Choose the right medium for the right audience and right situation
  • Design so you get the more out of each medium you use
  • Locate information where it is most likely to be used
  • Select interpretive stories that you can communicate effectively
  • Explain the “why” behind your interpretive planning and design decisions
  • Evaluate all of your existing communication strategies and improve them

In short, you will be able to create a plan for an entire, integrated information network that facilitates the visitor experiences you want to offer.
